APRIL 2013 ISSUE

*CORRECTION: The Fallbrook Avocado Festival is on Sunday, April 21, not Saturday, April 13. We regret the error.*

Spring has finally arrived and with it warmer weather to allow us to enjoy all of the things we love to do and which San Diego (and the Boulevard’s!) climate permits us to do right now—unlike some of our friends and relatives on the East Coast!

Some things to look forward to include the fabulous Fallbrook Avocado Festival, the Bonsall Education Foundation’s Bonsallpalooza and the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County’s annual Auction and Dinner Gala with its cool “New York, New York” theme. The Fallbrook-Bonsall area is exceedingly fortunate in having dedicated hard-working people willing to put all the effort that is required into bringing these types of events to life—and to further enrich our community.

Also worthy of your attention is the Bonsall Woman’s Club’s “Spring Into Summer” fashion event on May 19 at Pala Mesa Resort. This fashion show raises money for a host of local charities, including REINS (therapeutic horsemanship for the handicap) and the Burn Institute of North County.

This month, we decided to do something a little bit different for the “Vintage” section of the magazine: feature a cigar lounge. This is a lifestyle magazine, and the phenomenon of the cigar lounge is definitely part of the Southern California lifestyle, so we thought we would explore it this month with a visit to a local lounge to interview its habitués. And we are talking about “vintage” cigars!

Food is also an important part of our lifestyle. It was a pleasure to drop in on a larger-than-life eatery in the area: Oink and Moo Burgers and Barbecue in Fallbrook. Besides the fact that it serves some incredible delicacies, this place is just plain fun! Jonathan & Jennifer Arbel, who opened Oink and Moo last August, were great hosts. Thanks! Read about it.

Escondido’s Cruisin’ Grand is another sign that the warm days are here. This iconic festival along the city’s vital Grand Avenue is one of the pleasures of the spring and summer. Muscle cars, muscular music and fun with friends and family are just a few of the joys of this Friday afternoon event. Let our writer Dan Kidder take you there.

If you worry about the future of America (and many people do), do something about it by helping some of our future leaders to get a good education. Take part in the Hidden Meadows Community Foundation Scholarship Golf Outing, which is coming Saturday, May 18 at Castle Creek Golf Course.

This month’s “On Stage” by Gina Marie tells about how the Patio Playhouse Youtheatre program has been introducing young people to drama for over 30 years with its concept of “theater for kids, by kids.” The Patio is a vibrant and vital part of the arts in Escondido and North County.

See you next month!
